Surrounding Ourselves with Inspiration

by Colleen P Moyne (Colmo) (follow)
I'm a freelance writer living in the beautiful river town of Mannum in SA, dreaming of the day I can retire from the 9-5 to write full time.

Whatever we do, or strive to do, we are all inspired by something. It may be the encouragement of a loved one, a muse, an ambition for success or a need for money. It may even be a simple desire to contribute to our world in a meaningful way. But often, on a daily basis, we need small reminders to keep us on track.

We are told that if we want to save for a holiday, we should paste a picture of our holiday destination onto a moneybox and use it as an inspiration to save. If we want to lose some weight, we might use a new outfit to inspire us to stay strong. The right motivational quote at the right time can be a powerful influence.

Different things work for different people. In my car I have a small charm of Quan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. She represents compassion and charity - the industry I work in. She reminds me every day that I’m making a difference with what I do.

On my window sill at work is a card with a Maori proverb about community togetherness. It was given to me by a colleague when I first began my career managing volunteer programs.

I have kept a journal for the last seventeen years, and at the end of each year I reflect on the past year and write my plans and goals for the next one. Reading through these regularly gives me inspiration and the confidence to know I’m heading in the right direction.

I have a favourite quote by Leo Babuta in my diary that goes, ‘Identify what’s important to you - eliminate everything else.’

These simple things give me a sense of satisfaction and motivation. What inspires you? What do you surround yourself with to keep you on track to your goals?
