Paying it Forward - simpler than you think

The idea of paying it forward was popularised in the early 2000's when Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel Pay It Forward was made into a movie of the same name starring Haley Joel Osment, Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt, but the concept has been around for centuries.

In 1916 Lily Hardy Hammond wrote “You don’t pay love back; you pay it forward” and the concept behind Hyde’s novel, and the movie, was that we each carry out three acts of kindness for every one done for us. The effect is becoming a growing social movement.

The beauty of the pay it forward concept is that it’s not a charity, it is not the rich giving to the poor.

Paying it forward simply means that when someone does something for you, rather than (or as well as) repaying the kindness, you choose to do something kind for someone else.

It can be as simple as smiling at someone as you pass them on the street, or holding the door open for someone with their arms full of shopping and children. One of the most common acts of kindness is to simply pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the café queue.

Global Pay It Forward Day is April 24 but opportunities to pass on a kindness are daily. The Pay It Forward Foundation, founded by Charley Johnson, and endorsed by the author Ryan Hyde, aims to make the idea of paying it forward a universal one.

The PIF Experience website and phone app have been developed to make it even easier to think of a kindness or good turn you can do for others every day, and PIF bracelets remind us of our commitment to pay it forward every day. They're also a great tool for school students to get involved with pro-kindness campaigns.

So here are just a few suggestions to get you started on the road to greater kindness and paying it forward:

• Share an inspirational quote
• Give a homeless person a bottle of water and something to eat
• Give blood
• Tape the exact change for a drink to a vending machine

(These are all ideas from the Pay It Forward app for smart phones http://www.pifexperience.org/app/ )

Paying it forward doesn't need to be a huge task, you don’t need to spend money on it, and you don’t have to be a brave soul going up to strangers in the street, but it does need to come from the heart.

And my contribution today is this quote from the often profound, always witty, Dr Seuss:

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

What a fantastic article and a wonderful concept. I have personally (and regularly) done all of those suggestions except for sticking change to a vending machine... I had never thought of that one.. how cool. I am definitely going to give that one a go.

that's great! I love the opportunities that anyone can take - no one has to know you're doing it but you!
