Many people will be familiar with the phrase "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." This idea floats around blogs and quote sites but is often lost among so many other elegant phrases and life lessons.

Children have no concept of time. What does ten minutes mean when you've only been alive two and a half years? But as we get older we get no better at waiting - or at least not much better. The number of credit cards in the world - not to mention the impulse purchases on them - are evidence of our inability to display patience.

We live in the era of the quick-fix. Everything at our fingertips, any time of the day or night. What do we plan for? What do we build?

Many beautiful things do not take long to make. Many beautiful things do. And sometimes we learn just as much by a commitment to the journey as we do from the outcome. By committing - to another person, to a pet, to a weekly piano lesson - we can find true joy.
