Overcome what is holding you back

Many people have dreams and goals that they not only never reach, but also never even start. There are lots of things holding us back, here is a quick guide to overcoming these.

You don't know where to start

Many people never finish because they never start. While there are plenty of books and guides on setting goals and having a vision, there are not enough on just getting started.

My experience on this usually comes from doing jobs where I have no idea how I am ever going to finish. I can't come up with a step-by-step plan to achieve a goal because I still only have a fraction of the information I need on what I should be doing. Some people are completely stuck in this situation. They don't even know where to start or put all their effort into trying to create a plan.

For me, in this situation, I just take one thing and start working on it. Eventually chaos leads to order and a simple plan, then a more complete one. Other approaches are simply finding out where other people start and go from there.

You don't have the ability or knowledge

I know many people who have ambitions - Maybe they want to go on a long hike or start a business. However often the first thing you noticed is that they don't have the ability.

While you might have a dream or goal, one way to work on it is to build up knowledge or ability in a particular area. You want to hike across Nepal? That's great! Why not start doing a few local hikes, then longer ones before you tackle something harder?

It's the same with knowledge. Go out and learn. Get a job in the industry you want to start a business in, study or just volunteer and gain experience.

You lack the resources

There are lots I would be doing if I had the time and money. Many people have dreams or goals that require lots of resources to do.

You have 2 choices here. Either change your goals to being more modest. Want to start a clothing shop but you don't have the money? You can always start at the markets for far less money. Want to travel for 12 months across the world? Your choices could be to travel for less time or go to the cheaper countries.

You can also work on obtaining the resources. If you have a great dream, people will often come and help you. As the saying goes "Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid". So in working on your dream you find opportunities to obtain the resources as you go. However you have to make a start now.

You are scared of failure

Fear of failure is one of the greatest problems for achieving anything. People in business often become paralysed as failure looms so that they can't adapt. Other people don't even start. I know a person who has been talking about doing business for years, but always his question is "Is this business a 100% guaranteed to succeed?"

Failure is common on the road to success. I like to give the example of people learning languages. If you try to learn a language but you are embarrassed to make mistakes then you won't learn much.

If you try to run a business where everything you do has to succeed you will become paralysed by fear of failure. If you travel, love, learn or live you are going to fail many times. Building resilience and the ability to bounce back is important, because the failure doesn't matter, only the future chance of success.

People around you don't support you

You know all those computer nerds who went off to make billions. They often would hang around with friends doing things on computers, such as building software systems and so on. However that wasn't enough for success, they needed people who also like to talk business to help them go from technology to money making.

It is the same with everything. Want to cycle France? It helps to have friends who are into cycling. Want to learn Chinese? It helps to have people who will want to talk Chinese with you.

It is simple, make friends with people who share the dream or idea. It doesn't matter if it is making movies or building LEGO models. Having a support group really helps.

You don't finish what you start

One of the reasons that many people don't succeed at what they are trying to do is because they lack long-term motivation. Many people give up quickly or don't put in the hard work to make their idea come to life.

There are two answers to this. Work on things you are passionate about. If you are going to start a business, then you should choose an area that you put time and effort into. Don't just chase the money - find something that you like doing now and put time and effort into it.

The other approach is to break down your task into many little achievements. Don't write a 200 page book, start with a 200 word blog. It lets you get quick feedback and keeps you motivated.

Wrong time & wrong place

Most ideas have their time and place. I remember once travelling in winter on the backpackers route in southern China. It was interesting how many people I met who had some sort of crisis in their life and had decided to head off in the direction of Tibet. So they had no visa, no plan and it was winter and this is when the roads leading up to Tibet become snowed over.

Every idea has its time and place. A prototype of something similar to an iPOD was developed back in the 1980s. Except of course it would have only been able to hold 3 songs, not ten thousand.

Sometimes you just have to wait, move or change your idea. Don't try to simply impose your will on the world; find the right thing at the right time. It is like enjoying iced tea and ice cream in summer and hot chocolate and soup in winter.

Not being a people person

We like the idea of a misunderstood genius who has a great idea but can't communicate it with others. However we don't want to be that sort of person. Instead we want others to believe in our idea.

You know the sort of person I am talking about, they always have great ideas and everyone wants to come along for the ride. They might be having a party, doing charity work or starting a business.

You should definitely work on your people skills, no matter what, and realise how important these skills are. However, you can't just talk the talk, you have to also walk the walk. You have to do things that inspire and talk about them in inspirational ways.

What is holding you back?

You can tell when someone is doing something they want to do. Then there are no obstacles to success only challenges to overcome. They never talk about what they can't do, they talk about how they are working on solving the problems that will help them achieve what they want to do.

So there are lots of things holding all of us back, but they are simply things that can be solved, so go out and solve them.
