Mind Full or Mindful

It was a usual Friday morning until I looked outside my window. Everything had been cleaned overnight. The streets, cars, trees and even the mailboxes looked spotless. Somebody worked really hard all night while I was asleep. How often do we pay attention to the outside right after waking up? As humans, we are slaves to our body, and often our thoughts take a back seat. It is only when we see a difference; our heads turn around to notice it. And that is what happened with me today. I did not feel the warmth of the sun fighting against the cool breeze from my fan to wake me up.

This was one of the days when I knew what I needed to do in next eight or ten hours. Just knowing my tasks for the day gives me a purpose. There was no room for delay and I had to catch a train to the city. I decided to leave a bit early and enjoy my walk to the train station. Today I decided to ‘walk’ and not just ‘walk to the station’. This was my day for not getting to the destination but to enjoy the journey. Walking to the station seems like a really short journey for that. But who said so?

I usually come across some trees that I do not know about and some fruits on those trees that I have never seen before. I decided to stop today. I've wanted to know for a long time about those trees, so I stopped by and took some pictures.

It was a wonderful day. The trains were not so crowded. I could have easily managed to get a seat but I decided to stand by the door. I did not just notice the plants today. I also noticed the old laid-back shops at each station. I noticed the familiar faces getting on the train. Every face might have story of so many years passed by. I reminded myself how important it is to be nice to each other.

The most interesting people that I find on the train are those who still hold a book or a pen in their hand instead of a phone. The numbers have been going down rapidly. I see all the heads hanging down on the train. No, they are not ashamed, they are looking at their phone. It was a moment of realization. I realized that I do that sometimes as well. But, I am not doing this today. I will not distract myself with an application on my phone, and although reading a book is always wonderful, I will not do that today. I am going to be in the moment and be mindful of my surroundings. I am going to be mindful of where I walk and what I see. I am going to use all my senses and be aware of the moment. I consciously choose to be in the present today.
