We get very caught up with drama in this life. We pressure ourselves to complete tasks, to be in many places throughout the day, to get things done. We invite stress and unhappiness into our day. We are sometimes so busy with the menial that we miss out on the truly important fun things. The time with friends, the games with kids, the laughter.
Bring into focus what really matters to you
A friend was dying, and she wrote to me saying "Nothing much matters when you boil everything down...Just what you feel. It's quite nice having all the other stuff pared away."
It's a lesson many of us learn too late. It's vitally important and something we should try and embrace a little sooner.
You can choose the option that brings you happiness
As discussed in The Happiness Perspective, the bad things will still happen, but we need to think about whether they really matter. The big things? Yes, they are painful and we struggle for a while, but as for the little inconveniences, do we really need to let them ruin our happiness? No. Do we need to turn down dinner with friends because we are 'too busy'? No, ultimately that is the more important activity. Should we put off a game with the kids to sweep the floor? No, the floor will wait but the children won't.
Focus on Happiness
You don't need to stop doing your work and all those tasks that need to be done, but you do need them to stop impacting on your happiness.
Small changes in your outlook will make huge changes to your lifestyle and the happiness it brings. It is always our choice.
I am thankful for each brand new day that is given to me. I am also learning to appreciate the little things in life. For instance, not doing housework on a certain day, but, instead having lunch with a friend. Life is so short, we don't know are tomorrows.
