Eating for Happiness

Did you know that there are a range of foods that you can eat that will make you feel happier. At the opposite scale of things, too much junk food will definitely put you in a foul mood and a balance diet will make you feel happier anyway. However there are some specific foods for happiness. Here are just a small sample.

Chocolate

While it is usually recommended that you eat dark chocolate, the main reason is that it contains a higher proportion of chocolate to fats and sugars, so is generally healthier for you.

Chocolate has many benefits, such as helping the circulatory system, boosting cognitive ability and generally making you feel happier.

Chocolate is a poison in large amounts, especially in people who are unable to metabolize theobromine, particularly the elderly. In other words, everything in moderation.

Peas

There is some evidence that peas too have the ability to make you happy. So listen to your mother and eat your greens.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Since it was discovered the role that Omega-3 fatty acids play in brain function, they have also found that they play a role in mood.

The best source of Omega-3 fatty acids is fish, though hazelnuts and chia seeds can also help, they don't contain all the Omega-3 types (3-6-9).

Avocados

Along with a number of other fruits and vegetables, they are high in folate which helps produce the brain chemical serotonin. Low levels of serotonin will make you tired, put you in a foul mood and make it difficult for you to regulate your social behaviour.

Chickpeas

Not only are chickpeas high in calcium they are also high in vitamin B6 which influences our emotions. I think I need a chickpea salad tonight, maybe with spinach that is also known to be high in B6.

Rose Tea

My preferred rose tea is one where you place a whole dried rose bud into hot water. Rose tea is not only a delicious drink but can help you feel happier.

But wait there is more

There are numerous foods that help you feel happier. The best approach is to have a balanced diet but if you or a friend are feeling down why not make your own happy meal using the above ingredients.
